Are You Listening?

Are you listening?
Not just hearing the single words,
  the sentences,
  each-and-every syllable
coming out from the person’s mouth.

Are you really listening?
Listening to the feeling
  and emotion
  interlocked with ever crooked glance
  and smile.

Listening to the tears
  slowly dripping
  down their cheeks
  that they don’t cry.

Feeling the joy
  painted with every laugh
  that’s left unheard.

Are you hearing
  the very innerworkings
  of their heart?

 Hearing every heart break,
every sad smile screaming to be heard,
every tear cried shattering the silence surrounding it.

You listen to the words
  produced through their mouths,
  bellowing through heaving breaths
produced by their lungs.

But again, I ask, are you listening?

I wrote this last year when I was going through a bit of a depressive pit. I had just discovered I had anxiety and ADHD, just broke up with my first boyfriend, quarantine had just started. So, yeah, that was a fun time! But anyway, I didn’t share this to be all, “Woe is me!” like it certainly seems to be. I could have just left it in my journal, but I figured I’d share it just in case someone else needs to see it. Maybe I’m not the best speaker or writer, but I’m an excellent listener! So I want you to know that I’m listening. When you feel like you can’t speak, like you’re drowning and all your words are a garbled mush, just remember that someone is always listening. You’re never truly alone. Even when you are physically, this world is too filled to the brim with things we don’t understand. So, in heart and in mind, you’re never truly alone. ❤
