Me vs. the World

Growing up, I’ve always been told to hold compassion for others, and be there for them in their time of need. But, on the other hand, I’m also consistently told to not let others walk all over me. It’s a conflicting thing because in this world when you show compassion you’re automatically seen as someone who can be used. Someone who’s kindness can be abused.

So I’m left here in all my confusion questioning the kind of person I should be: someone who’s full of love and compassion or someone who who’s only there for themselves, who’s never taken advantage of? And I’d like to say I’d much rather be the compassionate, loving person who’s there when she’s needed. Not someone who sees the world as a one on one game (Mortal Kombat, if you will), the world vs. me.

Because, at the end of the day, you can only be one of two things: the user or the one who’s used. The one who’s out against the world, only in it for herself. Or the one who accepts the world with open arms, and a ready heart. Though the latter may seem to pay off, it truly only leaves you left alone in a cold world you already see as against you. Being the compassionate, giving person leaves others to believe you’re deserving of their compassion as well. People are much more willing to be there in your time of need if you’re willing to be there for them as well.

So, I suppose I’ve answered my own question. In a sick and twisted world of users and the used, I’d much rather be the used.
